I designed a series of event posters for Kuo Hua Trading, the largest Taiwanese food trading company in Canada. These posters and illustrations promoted two cultural events: Tainan (台南) Food Festival held from September 28 – October 4, and Kaohsiung (高雄) Food Festival held from October 5 – 15, both took place in Vancouver, Canada.

To celebrate the mid-autumn festival (中秋節) in Taiwan, these events featured fresh food products directly imported from Tainan and Kaohsiung, the two major cities in Taiwan, offering fun children’s games and a prize to entertain visitors. The focus of the designs was to attract visitors, especially families with children, leveraging Asian-style cute illustrations depicting various foods and games available at the events.

The first event Tainan (台南) Food Festival puts the spotlight on tropical fruits harvested in the region. The poster design prominently featured mass-harvested pomelo (文旦) in this festive season, which is integrated into traditional customs and children’s games such as ring toss, pomelo hat making by carvings, fishing and scavenger hunts, depicted by cute illustrations.

Similarly, the second event Kaohsiung (高雄) Food Festival highlighted fresh seafood and speciality products from Taiwan’s southern region, plus a live cooking show by a charismatic Taiwanese chef. The design layout, elements and visual aesthetics remained consistent with the first event, as well as small illustrations of children enjoying the event, further emphasising the connection between the two events.

These illustrations and design elements weren’t limited to event posters; they were also featured in local magazines, websites, bus stop advertisements, and even on a large outdoor advertisement covering part of the vehicle for Vancouver’s major public transport, Skytrain.
